Natural cholesterol management with plant-derived sterols and active allicin.

Description

Lesterol ® with Plant Sterols, Stanols & Allicin

Lesterol contains beta-sitosterol, one of hundreds of plant-derived 'sterol' compounds (including stanols) that have structural similarity to the cholesterol made in our bodies. Hence, when they are consumed they compete with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive tract. As a result, cholesterol absorption is blocked, and blood cholesterol levels are reduced. Elevated cholesterol levels are associated with obesity, heart disease and stress.

The most prevalent phytosterols in the diet are beta-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. Plant oils contain the highest concentration of phytosterols - so nuts and seeds contain fairly high levels and all fruits and vegetables generally contain some amount of phytosterols. Perhaps the best way to obtain beta-sitosterol is to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds (which obviously brings numerous other benefits as well) or to take a daily dose of Lesterol®.

Lesterol contains Allisure®, which is stabilised Allicin, the active component in garlic. Garlic has a long history of being used to aid in normalising cholesterol levels, and allicin is key to this.

Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used medicinally all over the world for more than 5,000 years, for a number of conditions, from hypertension to bacterial infections. Presently, it is used as an option for lowering LDL (bad)-cholesterol levels. Rahman and Lowe (2006) discuss the composition of the garlic plant as the reason for its medicinal properties; garlic, specifically the root bulb, is composed of water, sulfur compounds called thiosulfinates, amino acids, and numerous vitamins and minerals. In a study on the health effects of garlic, it appears that one particular thiosulfinate—allicin—is the active element in garlic responsible for its numerous medicinal properties, particularly its effect in the reduction of LDL- cholesterol.

We recommend an appointment with one of our qualified health practitioners to address background factors that might be contributing to your cholesterol levels. If elevated cholesterol or heart disease have affected other members of your family, you may be advantaged by understanding your genetic risk, which can help tailor the approaches to you specifically.Personalised nutritional plans can then be developed. Contact us for more information, or read about personalised nutritional genomics here.

Advisory Information
If you are allergic, intolerant, or hypersensitive to garlic or soy discuss whether you should take Lesterol® capsules with your healthcare practitioner. Garlic appears to have no effect on drug metabolism, but patients taking anticoagulants should be cautious. We advise cessation of high dosages of garlic 7 to 10 days before surgery because of the risk that garlic may prolong bleeding time.
